Abogeharan arabice scarabeus ut in libro de doctrina arabica.

Apparatus:

Abogeharan (-rã Hp) BCH ep | Abogebaram (-rã AD) AD f {'h' misread as 'b'} | Bogeharan j

Translation:

Abogeharan is Arabic for Latin scarabeus {"dung beetle"}, as it is said in the liber de doctrina arabica.

Commentary:

Abogeharan:
Cf. Wehr (1976): ﺍﺑﻮ ﺟﻌﺭﺍﻥ /abū ğiʕrān/ "scarabaeus, dung beetle". < √ğʕr "to drop its manure (animal)".

The word was already recorded for Spain in the Glossarium Latino-Arabicum, Seybold (1900: 457): Scarabeus ﺍﺑﻮ ﺟﻌﺮﺍﻥ /abū ğuʕrān/ [[1]].

Simon's often quoted source, the liber de doctrina arabica, has so far not been identified, but cf. what must be a similar glossary/dictionary - Vocabulista - ed. Schiaparelli (1871) [[2]]: p. 4: ﺍﺑﻮ ﺟﻌﺮﺍﻥ /abū ğuʕrān/ Scarabeus [[3]]; p. 571: SCARABEUS ﺍﺑﻮ ﺟﻌﺮﺍﻥ /abū ğuʕrān/ - ﺍﺑﻮ ﻓﺴﺎﺱ /abū fassās/ - ﺟﻌﻞ /ğuʕal/ [[4]].

Pedro de Alcalá (1883: 90) has: abadejo abogeharán [[5]]
N.b. abadejo means primarily “cod fish” but can also have the meaning “(scarab) beetle”.

Cf. Corriente (1997: 97): *(JcR): abū jucrān< beetle.
