Acrides
Acrides Stephanus iurada.
Apparatus:
Acrides ABCH f | Acridos e
iurada BH | virada AC ('iu' misread as 'ui'; n.b. "u" and "v" are not distinguished in the witnesses} | Intada f {'u' misread as 'n' and 'r' as 't'} | parada e
Translation:
For Greek acrides {"locusts"} Stephanus has Arabic iurada.
Commentary:
Greek ἀκρίδες /akrídes/ is the plural of ἀκρίς /akrís/ "grasshopper, locust, cricket".
For the Arabic word, which has suffered in some witnesses more corruption than usual, the intended transcription was most likely iurada or *iarada with the letter 'I,i' standing for the affricate sound /ğ/ as in English word-initially and finally judge; cf. Commentary, Arabic G littera, also: Girad, Ierad.
The word Simon is trying to transcribe is ﺟﺮﺍﺩﺓ /ğarāda/, the nomen unitatis of ﺟﺮﺍﺩ /ğarād/; cf. Wehr (1976): ﺟﺮﺍﺩ /ğarād/ (coll., n.un. ﺓ) "locust(s)", < √ğrd meaning "to peel; denude". Siggel (1950: 25): ﺟﺮﺍﺩ /ğarād/ Gryllus migratorius, Wanderheuschrecke {i.e. G. migratorius, syn. Locusta migratoria (Linnaeus, 1758), "migratory locust"} [[1]], [[2]], [[3]].
Stephanus in his Breviarium writes: akrides … locuste … iurida [[4]].
