Al et el articulus apud arabes significat id quod apud nos vulgariter addimus preponendo nominibus lo. la. li. unde plerumque reperiuntur nomina arabica sine illo al et eadem alibi cum al et idem sunt ut kitran et alkitran cali et alcali si igitur queratur de aliquo vocabulo arabico incipiente ab al et non reperiatur abiiciatur al et residuum queratur in loco suo.

Translation:

Al or el is the article, and in Arabic it is the word comparable to the one which we in folk-language normally add in front of nouns: lo, la, li. This is why nouns in Arabic are often found in some place without this al yet in another place with al, as e.g. in kitran and alkitran, cali and alcali. If therefore you want to find a certain word beginning in Arabic with al, and it cannot be found, ignore the al and the remaining word-body may be found in its appropriate place in the dictionary.
