Al et el articulus apud arabes significat id quod apud nos vulgariter addimus preponendo nominibus lo, la, li, unde plerumque reperiuntur nomina arabica sine illo al et eadem alibi cum al, et idem sunt ut kitran et alkitran, cali et alcali, si igitur queratur de aliquo voca, arabico incipiente ab al, et non reperiatur, abiiciatur al, et residuum queratur in loco suo.

“Al” or “el” is the article, and in Arabic it is the word comparable to the one which we in folk-language normally add in front of nouns: lo, la, li. This is why nouns in Arabic are often found in some place without this “al” yet in another place with “al”, as e.g. in “kitran” and “alkitran”, “cali” and “alcali”. If therefore you want to find a certain word beginning in Arabic with “al”, and it cannot be found, ignore the “al” and the remaining word-body may be found in its appropriate place in the dictionary.
