Aspis is {originally} Greek.

Commentary and zoological identification:

Greek ἀσπίς /aspís/ means "shield; body of men-at-arms"; but what is most likely meant here by Simon is its secondary meaning "Egyptian cobra, Coluber haje L. (LSJ) [[1]], [[2]]. Simon probably left the word untranslated because it had been adopted into Latin as aspis, however with the frequency of its meanings reversed, i.e. Latin firstly "asp, viper" and less commonly "shield", Lewis & Short (1879).
