Buchor
From Simon Online
Buchor arabice vapor fumigium.
Apparatus:
Buchor ABC ejp | Buchior f
vapor om. p
{fumigium} ms. p adds what seems to be an attempt to write ﺑﺨﻮﺭ {/buḫūr/} in Arabic script.
Translation:
Buchor is Arabic for "vapour" and Latin fumigium {"fumigation"}.
Commentary:
Buchor:
Wehr (1976): ﺑﺨﺎﺭ /buḫār/ "vapour, fume; steam".
It seems that Simon translated this item somewhat loosely, because in Andalusi Arabic a word is found - derived from the same root - whose vocalisation is closer to Simon’s, with a different meaning easily derived from “vapour” i.e. “aromatic smell, incense”. The root √bḫr means “vaporise; fumigate; to perfume with incense”.
The sources in question are
- Vocabulista ed. Schiaparelli (1871: 35):ﺑﺨﻮﺭ /buḫūr/ *Tus {i.e. “incense”} [[1]] and p. 618: TUS /buḫūr/ [[2]].
- And Pedro de Alcalá (1883: 328) Olores assi {como parfumes, i.e. “odours like perfumes”) buḳór [[3]].
- Karbstein (2002: 79) s.v. “1) Alpenveilchen Cyclamen" has a slightly different form as first element in the name ﺑﺨﺮ ﻣﺮﻳﻡ /buḫur maryam/; see also entry Buchormarien.
