Chromion
From Simon Online
Chromion Stephanus basalum .i. cepe.
Apparatus:
Chromion AC | Cromion B | Chronnon? or Chromion f | Chronnor? or Chromior ms. e
Translation:
{For Greek} Chromion Stephanus writes basalum, which is in Latin cepe {"onion"}.
Commentary:
Stephanus in his Breviarium writes: kromiõ … basalum [[1]].
Greek κρόμμυον /krómmyon/ means "onion", and the Arabic word that means the same is ﺑﺼﻞ /baṣal/, which Stephanus Latinises as basalum. The practice of Latinising Arabic word for which exist perfectly good indigenous lexemes is one of Stephanus’s whims.
