Greek κρόμμυον /krómmyon/ means "onion", and the Arabic word that means the same is ﺑﺼﻞ /baṣal/, which Stephanus Latinises as basalum. The practice of Latinising Arabic word for which exist perfectly good indigenous lexemes is one of Stephanus’s whims.
