Fulfel arabice piper.
Apparatus:
Fulfel AC efp | Fufel B j
Translation:
Fulfel is Arabic for Latin piper {"pepper"}.
Commentary:
Wehr (1976): ﻓﻠﻔﻞ /fulful, filfil/ "pepper". Siggel (1950: 56): ﻓﻠﻔﻞ /fulful/ Piper nigrum; Pfeffer {i.e. "pepper"}.
- However, a vocalisation of the word closer to Simon’s is found in a number of Andalusi Arabic sources, e.g. in the Glossarium Arabico-Latinum (ed. Seybold, 1900: 384): piper ﻓﻠﻓﻞ /fulfal/ [[1]].
- Cf. also the bilingual Arabic–Latin and Latin-Arabic Vocabulista glossary from Spain, ed. Schiaparelli (1871:156): ﻓﻠﻓﻟﺔ /fulfala/ Piper [[2]] and (1871: 523) PIPER: ﻓﻠﻓﻟﺔ ﻭﻓﻠﻓﻞ /fulfala wa fulfal/ [[3]].
- de Alcalá (1505), (1883: 344) has: pebre o pimiento {i.e. “pepper”} fúlfel [[4]].
- The form ﻓﻠﻓﻞ /fulfal/ was still used by the Spanish Morisco community in the early 17th c., as attested in Karbstein (2002: 233): 7) (schwarzer Pfeffer) {i.e. "(black) pepper"} ﻓﻠﻓﻞ ... ﺑﺎﺑﻴﺮﺵ ﻧﺍﻏﺮ /fulfal … bābīriš nāġri/, which translates: "/fulfal/ is {in Romance} /bābīriš nāġri/"; cf. Catalan prebrer negre {IPA: [pə'βɾe 'nɛɣɾə]} Piper nigrum L. "black pepper".
Cf. also Corriente (1997: 405), s.v. *(FLFL).
