Ierad arabice locusta liber de doctrina arabica.
Translation:
Ierad is Arabic for locust in the Liber de doctrina arabica.
Commentary:
Ierad:
Cf. Wehr (1976): ﺟﺮﺎﺩ /ğarād/ "locust(s)". Siggel (1950: 25): ﺟﺮﺎﺩ /ğarād/ Gryllus migratorius, Wanderheuschrecke {i.e. "migratory locust"}.
Simon's often quoted source, the Liber de doctrina arabica, has so far not been identified, but cf, what must be a similar glossary/dictionary - Vocabulista - ed. Schiaparelli (1871: 79) ﺟﺮﺍﺩﺓ /ğarāda/ Loqusta[[1]]; (1871: 460): LOCUSTAﺟﺮﺍﺩ ﺟﺮﺍﺩﺓ /ğarāda ğarād / [[2]].
For further information see Acrides, for another attempt at transcribing the Arabic word see Girad.
