Kafraryeudi aspaltum iudaicum, vocatur etiam nafta arabice grece napta ut infra et cetera.
Apparatus:
Kafraryeudi B | Kafraryendi AC {‘u’ misread as ‘n’} | Kaffi arendi e
nafta B | nafra AC {‘t’ misread as ‘r’} | naffe e {‘t’ misread as ‘f’}
Translation:
Kafraryeudi is Arabic for Latin aspaltum iudaicum {i.e. “Jew’s pitch”}, also called nafta in Arabic and in Greek napta, etc.
Commentary:
Cf. Siggel p.86: ﻗﻔﺮ ﺍﻟﻴﻬﻭﺩ /qafr al-yahūd/ “Judenpech” {i.e. lit. “pitch of the Jew’s}, and with nisbah: ﻗﻔﺮ ﺍﻟﻴﻬﻭﺩﻯ /qafr al-yahūdīy/.
Wehr: ﻧﻔﻄ nafṭ “naphtha, petroleum”. Siggel p.89: ﻧﻔﻄ /nafṭ/ Naphta, Erdöl, Rohpetrolium {i.e. "naphtha, crude oil, crude petroleum"}.
Greek: νάφθα /náphtha/ “naphtha”. The originally Greek sound combination /-phth-/ as in diphthongus, ophthalmia is often rendered by Simon with /-pt-/ as in diptongus, optalmia, and napta above. Cf modern Spanish diptongo.
