Since the sound /š/ - as word-initially in English shoe – does not exist in Latin and there were therefore no spelling provisions to draw on, scribes at times represent this sound by “sc”. This convention is still the norm in modern Italian orthography. Simon often transcribes Arabic lemmata in both the Italian and the Iberian tradition “x”, e.g. Xager; Scager {“tree”}; with this lemma Scebet and Xebet.
