Tarafa Stephanus et tarfe scripsit quod est tamariscus.
Apparatus:
Tarafa | Taraffa ms. e | Tarfar֯a j
Tarafa Stephanus et | T. S. pro ms. f | Tarafa & steph. B
tarfe | tarphe p
Translation:
Stephanus writes tarafa and tarfe, which is tamariscus {"tamarisk"}.
Commentary:
Stephanus in his Breviarium writes: muriki … tarafa [[1]]
N.b. μυρίκη /myríkē/ is Greek for “tamarisk”.
Stephanus transliterates the Greek letter Υ,υ {“Y,y”} as “U,u” instead of the usual “I,i”, which is probably just an etymologising device. Furthermore his form muriki portrays an itacist pronunciation of η {/ē/} > ι {/i/}, so he most likely pronounced */miríki/.
tarfe:
Cf. Wehr (1976): ﻃﺮﻓﺎﺀ /ṭarfāʔ/ "tamarisk"; Siggel (1950: 50): ﻃﺮﻓﺎﺀ /ṭarfāʔ/, ﻃﺮﻓﺔ /ṭarfa/; Tamarix gallica, Tamariske {i.e. "tamarisk"}.
Tarafa:
A vocalisation closer to Stephanus and Simon is found in Pedro de Alcalá, p. 409: tamariç mata {“tamarisk bush”} … taráfa [[2]];
also in Karbstein (2002: 156): ﻃﺮﻓﺔ /ṭarafa/, attesting that the Morisco community in Spain used this form of the word in the 17th c.
For further examples cf. also Corriente (1997: 328-9), s.v. *(ṬRF).
