Trachis grece asper.

Apparatus:

ABC f combine this entry and the next , i.e. Trachites, into one.

Translation:

Trachis is Greek for Latin asper {"rough; uneven; harsh"}.

Commentary:

This is the masculine form of the Greek adjective τραχύς /trachýs/, which means "rugged, rough; shaggy; harsh". τραχύς /trachýs/ in Simon shows a late Greek sound change υ > ι {/y/ as in French 'u' or German 'ü' > /i/} resulting in the pronunciation /trakhís/.
