Translation:

Iamus is Arabic for Latin bubalus {"buffalo, wild ox"}.

Commentary:

Wehr (1976): ﺟﺎﻣﻮﺱ /ğāmūs/ "buffalo".

According to Simon’s remarks in Preface § 6 he would have transcribed this lemma *Jamus rather than “Iamus” in order to indicate the pronunciation /ğamus/ with the initial sound as in English “jest”, but none of the witnesses make this distinction in their writing.
