Naham arabice structio avis magna que volare non potest grece struchocamelon dicitur ut in kiranida.

Translation:

Naham is Arabic for Latin structio, a big bird that cannot fly; in Greek it is struthiocamelon as mentioned in the Kyranides.


Commentary:

Wehr (1976): ﻧﻌﺎﻡ /naʕām/ (coll.; n.un.ﺓ) "ostrich (zool.)".
Siggel (1950: 71): ﻧﻌﺎﻡ /naʕām/ Struthio camelus, Vogel Strauß {i.e. "ostrich"}.

The ostrich is mentioned in the Kyranides, 1, ed. Kaimakes (1976: 63-4), (ELEMENTUM XVIII Σ.) as Στρουθιοκάμηλος {/Strouthiokámēlos/}, avis, .i. Struthio gambarum vulgò - "Strouthiokámēlos/, a bird, i.e. in folk language: the Struthio gambarum, i.e. Struthio with the {long} legs".
