Nesse
Nesse et nessefragum scripsit Stephanus pro nixe quod est amilum. Item alibi nesestum.
Apparatus:
Nesse f | nese Stephanus | Nessem C ep | Nessen B | Nessẽ A | Necõ? j {The addition of a final nasal in ABC ejp remains unexplained}
nesse fragum (-gũ A) AC | nessefragũ e | nesefragũ B | nessefregũ fjp
pro nixe quod est om. j
ms. p. skips a line and adds text from the subsequent entry Nese: quod ē asa siluestris & ē alba. But the mssing text
amilũ it͋ alibi nesestũ is written more faintly by a different hand in a note in the margin of ms. p.
nesestum (-tuʒ j; -tũ A) AC j | nesescuʒ f | neseschũ B | nesestu e | (nesestũ p)| nesestegũ Stephanus
Translation:
Nesse and nessefragum writes Stephanus for Arabic nixe, which is in Latin amilum {"starch"}. Sometimes he writes nesestum.
Commentary:
Nesse:
Wehr (1976: 967): ﻧﺸﺎﺀ /našāʔ/ "starch, cornstarch".
Siggel (1950: 71): ﺀﺎﺸﻧ /našāʔ/ Stärkekleister, Wäschestärke {"starch paste, starch"}.
ibid. نشاستج /nišastağ/ {sic!} = ﻧﺸﺎﺀ /našāʔ/ < Persian نشاسته /nišāstah/. Cf. Steingass (1892: 1402): A نشاستج nishāstaj (from P. نشاسته), Starch.
nessefragum:
The final two syllables in nessefragum are the result of contamination with words like saxifragum. nesestum is the Latinized form of *nesestag. nessefragum without the Latinized ending > *nesefrag is a misreading of *nesestag {"long s" misread as 'f', 't' misread as 'r'}.
Stephanus in his Breviarium writes: amilon … nese nesestegũ [[1]].
